Solar Electricity Globally on the Rise

Solar power plant (Serpa, Portugal)

According to a recently released analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA) up to a quarter of the global electricity production could be archived through solar electricity by 2050. The solar Photovoltaic (PV) and Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) roadmaps launched on May 11th in Valencia/Spain, during the Mediterranean Solar Plan Conference hosted by the Spanish presidency of the EU.

"The combination of solar photovoltaics and concentrating solar power offers considerable prospects for enhancing energy security while reducing energy-related CO2 emissions by almost six billion tonnes per year by 2050." , said IEA executive director Nuobo Tanaka.

Solar power is the generation of electricity from sunlight. This can be direct as with photovoltaics, or indirect as with concentrating solar power, where the sun's energy is focused to boil water which is then used to provide power. If it continues to double in use every two to three years, or less, it would become the dominant energy source this century.
